Pedestrian Bridge Nová Karolina

Ostrava, Czech Republic
Implementation 2012
We are the authors of the pedestrian bridge concept and, in cooperation with the contractor, we have prepared a one-stage implementation project for the developer.

The footbridge is one of the entrances to the Nová Karolina shopping centre, which was built on the site of the former Karolina coking plant. The footbridge carries pedestrians over the railway line and adjacent roads. The deck of the footbridge consists of a steel box beam of a constant depth of 0.70 m with an orthotropic bridge deck. In the main span, the bridge deck is suspended from the steel arch of box section by tie bars. A tuned mass damper, concealed in the deck, limits the vibrations of the structure caused by pedestrian movements. The handrails of the guardrail accommodate bridge deck lighting. The structure is further enhanced by festive illuminations, adding a special touch during significant events.
