Footbridge across the Elbe River

Hradec Králové, Czech Republic
Competition design 2014
We are co-authors of the design for a footbridge over the Elbe River in Hradec Králové, which we developed for a public architectural and structural competition.

The required elevation of the bridge deck above the river naturally forms a shallow arch, tapered at the ends, which combined with a variable concrete load-bearing structure follows the tradition of bridges in the area. The footbridge, through its form and structure, does not intrude into the riverbed nor disrupt long-distance or close-up views of the heritage zone and the city’s main landmarks. However, through its area and function, it has the potential to attract people and activities to its surroundings. The city’s active waterfront is extended over the water, elevating the bridge’s role from a mere crossing to a place for leisure and experience.
