Footbridge across the Ohře River

Kynšperk nad Ohří, Czech Republic
Competition design 2020
We are the authors of the competition design for the reconstruction of the footbridge, which was subsequently selected for the development of the project documentation for building permit (DSP) and the tender documentation.

The simple reinforced concrete structure of the new footbridge replaces the original reinforced concrete construction, including the approach areas, while preserving the wooden part of the bridge. The bridge provides a comfortable connection for pedestrians and cyclists across the Ohře River and also serves as an entry point to the island. The bridge over the island and riverbed appears to levitate on slender steel supports that do not introduce any undue mass into the space, allowing views of the greenery for people moving on the island. The supports are shaped to resemble the trunks of surrounding trees. The load-bearing structure of the bridge is slim with a simple, straight soffit. Its side surfaces are covered with a frameless balustrade that visually breaks up the concrete surface of the main structure from a side perspective.
